There's no denying there's plenty to do in Kenmare, Co. Kerry. But what would the locals recommend? This is my own Top 10 Pick for things to do with kids (yes, I have a kid to do all these with!). I run Art & Mór so it of course makes the list along with my favourite places to eat out, go shopping or even just take a stroll. They're all within walking distance so it's easy to try them out even if you don't have transport or feel like bundling the kids into the car! Or for those visiting towns in the area and looking for a great place to spend the day, Kenmare has so much to offer. There's kids activities for rainy days and sun, things that are free to do, and things that are just good old family fun for your Summer!
1. Breakfast (lunch or dinner!) at Mick & Jimmy's
Located at the top of Henry Street in Kenmare, this restaurant is definitely the best way to start your morning! Our regular visits there with my 2 year old are punctuated by the happy chatter of other kids enjoying all the good stuff available. If you're looking for something sweet there's delicious pancakes with hot chocolate, or choose something from the savoury selection with avocado on toast or huevos rancheros. Lunchtime is just as special, and the friendly and attentive staff have colouring pencils and activity pages for the kids. All in all a great way to begin your stay!

2. Art & Mór - Pottery Painting, Kids Crafts and Arty Fun!
Whatever age your kids are, we've got something for them, and there's stuff for parents to do too! We're often asked whether we have anything for boys and girls who aren't into arts and crafts and the answer is ABSOLUTELY! Trains, cars, dinosaurs, Minecraft, princesses, unicorns and more. There's so much to choose from the only complaints we get are how hard it is to choose!
It's perfect for rainy days or when the sun gets too hot to stay out. And it's not just painting we have to offer, there's a variety of activities you can choose from.

3. The Wednesday Market
If you're lucky enough to be visiting Kenmare on a Wednesday, this is a great way to entertain the kids and broaden their horizons (and taste buds!). Take a walk along the streets and experience a fantastic open-air market every week. There's olives and sundried tomatoes to taste, a hundred different cheeses, local honeycomb, and many more stalls filled with a fantastic variety of food, clothes, toys and unique items to the Kenmare area. It's a great way to teach the kids about all sorts of different things.
4. Take a break... have a Kenmare Ice Cream
There's nothing like an ice cream on a sunny day. Actually, it doesn't need to be all that sunny for me to feel a need for ice cream. Kenmare Ice Cream is made locally and is the best I've tasted, locally or abroad. They've got all your favourite flavours plus some you probably never thought of! And if there's a chill in the air or clouds in the sky they've got hot crepes and hot chocolate to warm you from within.

5. Bath & Crafts
These guys have a cute little shop situated just through the arch off Henry Street and is a must for anyone with kids. Even if you don't get further than their wishing well and fairy chair, it's a magical place. They do much more than just bath stuff though, they have fairies to take home with you, spa products, and a bunch of locally made crafts to buy as gifts. The kids will love it and you get some shopping done!

Another great spot for a bit of shopping is NEST on Henry Street. Gorgeous designer items for adults and children, with a complete toy shop and kids room at the back. You'll find all the old-fashioned toys you remember from your own childhood including craft kits and musical boxes, as well as a variety of modern things you've never come across! They have some books for children too and you can tell everything on display has been selected with a lot thought and consideration. You probably won't find most of these items easily elsewhere so it's the perfect shop to pick up a few bits.

7. Save your pocket money and take a walk
If the weather is nice, there are some great walks for families in the area. Even for those without a car on their holidays you can get lost in the almost-wilderness of Reenagross which can be accessed via the Pier Road or through the golf course at the top of town. The walkways are nice and safe and well away from traffic, branching off to follow the estuary where you can watch the sea birds and wildlife.

8. Kenmare Playground
There's a great playground for kids located at Kenmare Shopping Centre, which is where you'll find Art & Mór and Supervalu, so you can get the shopping done and pick up your painted pottery at the same time! You'll usually find many local families here also during the summer months as its a great place to hang out and play. Slides, swings and climbing frames, it has plenty for all ages.
9. Bookstop Cafe
Lunchtime... head down to the Bookstop Cafe near Cromwell's Bridge! There's a lovely pedestrian bridge down the street from it, accessed by the Cromwell's Court car park. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy going, with bookshelves lining the walls. They love kids in there which is awesome and my 2 year old gets loads of happy hellos whenever we go. They are also great at catering for anyone with dietary restrictions, offering gluten free, vegan, dairy-free and vegetarian options on their menu.

10. Camps & Festivals
Whether you're just in town for the day or a few weeks, there's usually something exciting going on! At Art & Mor we run weekly day camps and special offers so that you won't miss out even if you're only passing through, but check out Kenmare Events & Offers on Facebook to see a compilation of everything that groups and business local to the area have to offer. We have the awesome Halloween Howl at the end of October, Music Festivals and Summer events to keep everyone having fun!
